Past and present BMX riders meet, compare notes
VALPARAISO -- Wintry weather outside suggested it wasn't quite bike-riding season yet, but bike lovers past and present gathered in Valparaiso recently for the eighth annual Midwest Oldschool BMX Show. The event benefited the Freedom BMX track in Lowell and was open to bike motocross enthusiasts of all ages. It included a best-bike competition, raffles and a flat-land BMX demonstration.
Show organizer Ed Nowdomski said the event attracts today's young riders and gives former BMX riders an opportunity to show off their classic bikes.
"It's kind of like a car show for bikes," said Nowdomski, who was instrumental in getting the Freedom BMX track established in 2007. Proceeds from the Oldschool show help get the track ready for the new season, which begins in April. Nowdomski said about 150 bikes were entered in the show. Attendees voted throughout the day on the best rides in different categories, based on the bikes' eras. There also were categories for cruisers, freestyle bikes and best in show. "The riders build bikes, and most of the bikes are how they were ridden by the guys when they were younger," Nowdomski said.
Jay Doyle of Elgin, Ill., said when he looks at a vintage bike he's concentrating on how clean it is and the authenticity of its components. He said most builders spend a lot of time finding authentic parts at swap meets or on the Internet. "You look to see if they're from the same era as the bike, and are they correct," said Doyle, who has been riding since he was eight. "At something like this you're not going to see something that isn't era-correct. We've all been around bikes for so long, we just know." Doyle added: "It is the equivalent to collecting classic cars, but at a fraction of the cost. But the same thing applies. You can't fool these guys. We know if it's the real deal or not because we're the ones collecting the bikes."
Nowdomski and his wife, Mary, have seven children, and all of them are BMX racers. "It's an individual sport, so you can be as serious and excel as much as you want to, and it's for all ages and genders." He said riders as young at 3 years old come to the Freedom track to ride.
Nowdomski's daughter Teresa, 13, is the state's top female racer in her age group. "It's really fun and you make a lot of friends," said Teresa, who is known as Flying T when she races.
Dexter Pritchard of Valparaiso came to the Oldschool show with his daughter Meagan, 13, who started riding when she was 6. Dexter Pritchard once owned a bike shop and was involved in the Oldschool event before the Freedom track started sponsoring it. "It's good to see Ed keeping this going," Pritchard said. "For me, this just brings back the old days, seeing the old bikes that look like they came right off the showroom floor." Meagan agreed that the vintage bikes are fun to see. "I like seeing the older bikes and what used to be raced," she said. Today's bikes, she noted, are much lighter than when the sport began about 30 years ago. "There's more engineering," her dad explained. "The bar has definitely been raised a bit." Get rolling
